Responsive Web Design

What is Responsive Design and Do You Need It?

From the early beginnings of the Internet until fairly recently, the web browsing experience has been relatively similar for everyone: a laptop or desktop computer with a monitor. Websites were typically designed for the then-current "lowest common denominator" of monitor sizes and screen resolutions. Today, a large portion of web browsing and online searches are done on non-traditional devices such as smart phones like the iPhone and Android phones, as well as tablets such as the iPad or Windows Surface, creating an even higher need to consider the dynamic nature of each website and its presence on the web.

Responsive Design is a technique that adapts a web site to the user's particular device. For example, instead of showing the entire desktop version of a site zoomed out on your phone, a responsive site will reflow to present a better experience.

How Does it Work?

By targeting different browser sizes, a responsive website can reflow text and images to deliver the best possible experience to whichever device is being used. You can even completely hide or show entire sections of a website depending on browser size and capabilities.

Additionally, certain aspects of sites can become more prominent on different devices. A restaurant site, for example, may want to emphasize the phone number, directions, and menu to mobile and tablet visitors, while desktop users may have their attention drawn to the "About the Chef" page.

What Happens Without Responsive Design?

Without a properly designed responsive website, a website can potentially lose traffic, website visitors, and even business. Non-responsive websites quickly look dated, and do not give users on all devices a seamless experience. Our up to date web design services offer our clients responsive websites that are accessible and easy to browse on multiple types of devices, increasing user engagement.

With less and less time available in our schedules, more and more online browsing and shopping time is being spent on non-traditional devices. By accommodating all types of users, regardless of their web browsing preference at any one time, a responsive design is often referred to as the “holy grail" of web design methods and leads to less frustration for visitors.
